OCTOBER BREAST CANCER CAMPAIGN

Whether you’re a man or woman it is worthwhile to perform a breast examination for the early detection of breast cancer. The two most common methods of examination are the breast self-examination and the mammogram.

SELF TESTING METHOD
Self-breast-examination

It is advantageous to be aware of the normal consistency of your breasts as it may help you notice any changes which may present signs of breast cancer.

What to do if you detect something

The first step is to consult your doctor. Your medical practitioner will then have good authority to refer you to a surgeon or another specialist for further consultation if there is a need.

MAMMOGRAM

A mammogram is an X-Ray of the breast which is used to detect abnormal growths or changes in the breast tissue. Using a digital x-ray machine particularly for the analysis of breast tissue, a technician compresses the breast and takes pictures from at least two different angles.

A 3D Mammography, also known as Tomosynthesis, is a specialised mammogram machine that captures 3D images of the breast. When used alongside the 2D Mammogram it significantly boosts breast cancer detection.

Mammograms vital as they are a more effective way of detecting breast cancer before it is big enough to feel or see. Most medical aid schemes will pay for the procedure or provide an annual mammogram from a Screening fund. For many screening centres medical aid rates are applicable. It is wise to check the benefits associated with your scheme prior to making an appointment.
