SETHOKGA HOSTEL ERADICATION PROGRAMME

PROJECT SUMMARY

The hostel eradication programme, was pronounced by the then MEC for Housing (Gauteng Province) in 2004, that hostel eradication was a growing priority. It was reported that there were 60 hostels in Gauteng province that require conversions into family self-contained units by 2010. As part of this initiative, the redevelopment of Sethokga Hostel in Tembisa was assigned to Lesedi Technical Engineering Consulting, a registered Professional Resource Team (PRT) of the Gauteng Department of Local Government and Housing.

SCOPE

The objective of this project was mainly to improve living conditions for the community living in these hostels and rectify years of neglect. Lesedi was assigned to design the structures and provide construction supervision of the new family units and complete infrastructure services as well as the decommissioning. In the first phase of the project, existing buildings in phase 1a and 1b were demolished. Phase 1A had a site area of 3.4 hectares which consists of 19 buildings. These 19 buildings comprise of 2 types of buildings:

Type 1 – 8 buildings – 144 units

Type 1 – 8 buildings – 144 units

In the first phase the cumulative total was set to be 58 (1 bedroom units), 137 (2 bedroom units) and 81 (3 bedroom units).


Lesedi and the Department ensured that the community of Sethokga was involved as much as possible in the project, by electing members of community to be part of the current project steering committee. All activities were executed in consultation with the local community and beneficiaries. Once the development was completed, the Sethokga hostel residents were integrated into the broader local community of Tembisa.
