Freedom Day

This year on the 27th of April South Africa celebrated Freedom Day. This day marks 27 years since South Africa had its first democratic election. Freedom Day signifies black South Africans counting for something legally and being heard in their country by the government. The ability to vote on the 27th of Apirl 1994 was the affirmation of the rights of Black South Africans. Freedom day marked the end of colonialism and the end of oppression that was cast on South Africans since 1652.

Being free to speak up and have a chance to contribute towards peace, justice and a fair institute for our country. We have a long way to go in solving the problems that resulted from apartheid as many of the resulting problems we inherited still plague our nation. Ours as citizens is to work towards eradicating poverty, racism, unemployment, sexism and all forms of discrimination from apartheid that hold us back as a nation.

Let the popular expression “Are you free or are you dom?” be a reminder that freedom comes with responsibility. As South Africans we need to guarantee our freedom by being vigilant against those who violate human rights and erode our values of freedom. We are responsible for using our freedoms wisely, to advance ourselves, our families, and our country at large. Let us continue to celebrate and safeguard our freedom as we work towards a brighter future.

NEVER, NEVER AND NEVER AGAIN SHALL IT BE THAT THIS BEAUTIFUL LAND WILL AGAIN EXPERIENCE THE OPPRESSION OF ONE BY ANOTHER.
